Myth Busters About Hearing Loss

A lot of people have misconceptions about hearing loss. One big myth is that only older people experience it. While it’s true that hearing loss is common in older adults, younger people can have it too. Some are born with it, and others develop it from loud noise exposure.

Another myth is that hearing aids “fix” hearing completely. Hearing aids help amplify sound, but they don’t make someone hear perfectly like before. They just make sounds clearer and easier to understand.

Some people also assume that if someone is deaf or hard of hearing, they can’t communicate well. That’s not true at all. Many people use sign language, lip reading, writing, or even technology so they can communicate effectively. For example, American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete language with its own grammar and culture.

Art connects to this because art isn’t only about sound. Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals express themselves through painting, dance, visual storytelling, and even signed performances. Art shows that communication and creativity go beyond just hearing, it’s about expression and connection.
